SEO Case Study: Typhoon!

I created this website in 2021 - purely because I liked the domain!

Typhoon! Website

  • Industry: Local Hong Kong Business Directory
  • Size: 8+
  • Website: typhoon.hk
This site was launched in 2021 - really only because I was surprised that the domain was available!

Website Goals

  • To continue to build out content for niches that I cover on the site;
  • To get as much traffic and conversions as possible.

Project Overview

The domain was completely new so lacked any authority, so I 301'd a bunch of other local .hk domains that I bought to power it up, and that definintely worked for the search terms that I was after. I scraped other directories and built out my own directories for specific niches in Hong Kong. I created the following directories, and the one that Google seems to have liked and the one I find the most interesting is the "Mobile Phone Repair" keyword-cohort.

The business directories I built out under this domain are as follows:

  • Accountants
  • Car Repair
  • Dentists
  • Dog Parks
  • Gyms
  • Hair Dressers
  • Horse Riding
  • Immigration Services
  • Kid Parties
  • Lawyers
  • Locksmiths
  • Mobile Repair
  • Shipping
  • Sports
  • Pets
  • Removals

The Challenge

The major challenge with this site was being able to get it indexed for anything! There is a lot of competition in Hong Kong for similar business directories so mine had to be "different" or more useful.

SEO Approach & Solution

My approach was to launch and see what Google liked! The answer was that out of all the directories I created on Typhoon.hk - the one that seems to have ranked the best is the "Cracking Mobile Phone" niche which is certainly an interesting niche to be able to dominate.
